5 Tips For A Healthier 2011

There are a few simple things that everyone can do, regardless of fitness level, current health, or lack of time that will make a difference in your health over the course of a year.

5) Drink more water.  One glass when you get up.  One glass before bed. 1 small glass with each meal and big glass between meals. Save coffee for after your morning glass of water.  Save wine or other alcoholic beverage until your last meal of the day.  If you add lemon to your water, hot or cold, it will boost the benefits for your body.

4) Ditch the soda.  I suggest going cold turkey and just stop choosing the sugary sodas.  If you drink diet, it is even worse for you than regular soda drank in moderation.  Diet soda has chemicals  that no one needs.  If you can't go cold turkey, have one a day until that becomes comfortable and then every other day, then once a week and then only as a special treat now and then.

3) Eat vegetable based soups each week.  You have to eat anyway, you might as well choose something that is nutritious, easy for your body to handle and also adds water to your day.  Aim for vegetable based soups twice a week to start, working up to four times a week.

2) Add a glass of red wine, almost daily.  Unless you are under 21 years old or have a tendency to struggle with saying no to alcohol, a glass of red wine can be helpful.  First, red wine has antioxidants that have health benefits as well as the added benefit of relieving stress.  Since it is my belief that a glass everyday makes it difficult to notice if it is becoming an unhealthy habit, I recommend having one or two alcohol-free days each week.

1) Talk.  Many people don't talk about their day, their stress, their joys or their frustrations.  Talking can reduce stress, invite the opportunity for laughter, strengthen relationships and keep your communication skills fresh. Talking does not have to be about deeply personal topics, it can start with common interests, current events, the weather or communicating gratitude. You can talk to friends, co-workers, neighbors or the clerk at the grocery store.

Once a small change becomes a habit, you can add another one or a bigger one.  It's really about constant improvement.
